European Roma Holocaust Memorial Day
On the eve of the European Roma Holocaust Memorial Day, the European Commission issued a solemn and powerful joint statement reaffirming its unwavering dedication to honoring the memory of Roma and Sinti victims of the Holocaust. This annual abservance, held on 2 August, marks one of the most tragic and often forgotten atrocities committed during the Nazi era: the systematic extermination of the Roma population, which claimed at least 500,000 lives across Nazi-occupied Europe. The statment, signed by President Ursula von der Leyen, Executive Vice-president Roxana Mînzatu, and Commissioner Hadija Lahbib calls for both remembrance and action, and outlines the European Union's continuing fight against discrimination, exclusion, and antigypsyism in all its forms.
